TIKE SAAB HISTORY AND PRESENTATION
Winter 1995: if it will be a boy we will call him Andrea, not a baby need to be born but the first mountaineering school of alpinism, ski touring and rock climbing of the so called Collegio Guide Alpine Piemonte. A name has to be found and as usual, after long time-consuming sessions we decided on Tike Saab.

Tike Saab is the title of a book written in 1972 by Guido Machetto. Like us he is also a mountain guide out of the Biella area. So it seems to be logical to borrow the name of his book Tike Saab to honour this person. What Tike Saab means we read in his book in a chapter named Karakorum ’69 ……Mahamad took my hands between his ones in a special way, only done by muslims, and with a big smile of the this person of 1 meter 80 he said: Tike Saab, which in the Karakorum highlands means everything. It signifies: yes Sir, all right Sir, that Allah will protect you Sir; we have been together for two months in the mountains, through the mud, angry, enjoyable, frozen and now I’m going home and you are also going home, Tike Saab….

After the school was baptized everything became more easy and in no time we went to the notary to sign the documents for the foundation; Paolo Cavagnetto, Gianni Lanza, Amabile Ramella and Carlo Gabasio, the pretended founders of Tike Saab.

Since 1983, first individual and later together as Tike Saab, we are happy to share the emotions with the people we brought already to the mountains near Biella and in most remote parts of the world. Unforgettable are the happiness after the climb of the Torre Nord del Paine, Mount Kenya or the emotions after the exploration and climb of the Balmaceda mountains (Patagonia of Chile), a group mountains completely to discover because of lack of information. During these occasions after tiredness, angriness and a lot of emotions, existing friendships were consolidated and new inseparable were born; friendships and adventures which we hope also to share with you.

Today the school, which has its base camp in Biella (Italy) and organises couses and travels worldwide, consists of Carlo Gabasio, Gianni Lanza, Gigi Airone and Andrea Mettadelli.

Became a mountain guide in 1983, born in Biella:’…since 1961 as a child I started to go into the mountains and since all these years I have seen the evolution of mountaineering from early morning until today; almost twenty years as a passionate guide in the Alps and the rest of the world, but to be honest still in love with the Alps around Biella where my roots are and this fantastic adventure started: a life in the mountains…’
